Logged on just now for a minute to put in my vote on whether Howard Dean ought to opt out of federal matching funds (I think he should, and then make a big stink about the system being so broken that otherwise nobody can compete with the money-machine), and decided to check my friends page while I was on before I switched the line back off to go indulge the D2 addiction some more, and what should I find but the most interesting tidbit in Neil Gaiman's journal about a Mac In Distress:

Teresa Nielsen Hayden, "Making Light"

And this is a Mac in the SF/F field on top of it... I shall be redistributing a portion of the "Griff's Medical Fund" $$ to her when PayPal comes back up at 5AM my time, since this is exactly the sort of thing I had in mind to do with the excess funds. Paying it forward, and all. :)

And speaking of the Fund, I did sit down and rough out the math, and now I have to match it up with the emails, which will be a few more days... It occurred to me that since I get some invite-codes with the Paid account, it would perhaps be a good start to the project to create a community journal for the management of the Fund -- requests in, donations in, disbursements out, etc.

So I am pleased to announce the establishment of [livejournal.com profile] griffs_kids: the idea is that Mac users in need of repair funds or workable cast-offs like Formerly will post their details, and provide their own PayPal donation buttons for direct contributions by the readers of the Community. Although this will probably mutate hideously in practice. (I think I will also put up a PayPal jar of the journal's own but I have to decide on how to administer that email/PayPal wise.) Spread the word in your Mac user group, since the time to learn about this is while the old Mac is still working...
