Ever have one of those days when you end up having to reformat the HD to print out a letter...? Formerly and OS 9.2.2 are about to have a parting of the ways, methinks, because it's just come to my attention that Adobe Type Manager apparently doesn't work at all in said OS revision, and, dammit, I need my type 1 fonts to work with the non-PS Samsung. Especially Adobe Garamond, which has long been my business-letters font of choice. And I have a Very Important Business Letter to print out right now...

So, the program for the immediate future:

  • Move relevant bits of Formerly's accumulated crud onto Griff for safekeeping (and at least I'm not having to back-up onto a zillion floppies for once)
  • Format Formerly's hard drive
  • Install OS 8.5 from Griff's disk set onto Formerly
  • Update the damned CD drive ROM-whatdoyoucallit so the CD drive will stop making the 747-engine noises (since 9.2.2 doesn't understand this update -- it thinks it's built into itself and it damn well isn't)
  • Update Formerly to 9.1 with newer-iMac disk set I managed to buy on eBay, assuming it works (otherwise update to 8.6 and go holler at the seller)

All by Friday morning so I can print out one sheet of paper and stick it in with the manuscript. Bloody nuisance.

Not to mention that I've deliberately been putting this process off because I didn't want the CD drive to be working properly until I've got the manuscript out the door -- since when it works, that means I can play Diablo 2, and productivity-wise this is Bad. Very Bad. Very, Very Bad. And the 1.10 patch came out this afternoon, too... Must stay on task, must stay on task.... Aigh.
