Whoo, Nelly, that was a bad one: a java applet at the CNN link
carneggy just posted not only took down my iMac, it scrambled the B-tree whatchamajigger to the extent that I couldn't even get him to reboot from the HD because he couldn't find a blessed System Folder. Fortunately, I remembered to try booting from my Norton CD before going off to have hysterics (so it could be thinking away while I went running in circles shrieking about the potential expense of a trip to the shop), and after an ominous first run that came out "an unknown error occurred", running Disk Doctor again managed to repair the trouble, albeit after a false start where I had to boot from the CD again, but at least could mount the HD to see that its problem was the System Folder having come unblessed (and LO, such was the force of My techly Presence that it wised up and re-blessed itself before My eyes, yea verily...). So that's one less trip to the shop for a member of the Household, anyhow. And I am calmed somewhat in knowing that A, this is fixable if it happens again, and B, in fact this is almost exactly the same thing that happened to one of Formerly's predecessors and he went on to live a long and productive life afterwards.
Still prone to hysterics at the thought of being computerless again, though. Must work harder on saving pennies for a new Mac; step one, I need some pennies... {sigh}
