The Prequel's Progress: 29671. (Although probably closer to an actual thousand words since last noted, since part of the session involved sorting out what I'd just written the time before and tossing part of it.) Successfully worked through the sequencing issue mentioned previously, and am now trying to figure out why the narrator's sidekick's ne'er-do-well brother the mercenary wants to appear with the vaudeville host who seems to be a cross between Johnny Carson and P T Barnum... This is what happens if one neglects one's characters, they get disgruntled and go out and find their own hobbies. Eh.

Sullen!Colon has been behaving itself, which is a pleasant surprise considering what usually happens to me when I'm forced into taking Imodium. (I note that they're now using a "Godzilla" analogy in their commercials, BTW.) Serendipitously, one of the books in the Library Stack this week has been Why Some Like It Hot, which offers up surprising insights on why some foods are not one-size-fits-all, such as the collective Sardinian hypersensitivity to fava beans. I suspect that my experience with sensitivities to some varieties of apples and not others is exactly this sort of microvariation in the human genome that he's talking about. (Also, the section on varying reactions to hot pepper pain makes me feel like less of a wuss. Interesting that pepper-wussiness appears to be linked as well to the perception of strong alcohol as tasting exceedingly bitter -- that being one of the big reasons that I never picked up the habit...)

Did not watch the "State of the Union" the other night, opting instead for a History Channel documentary about the science of hydraulics -- dull, but much less infuriating. Did, however, stay up until 2:30 AM this morning to watch Anthony Hopkins chewing the scenery as Nixon. I have vague toddlerish recollections of being aware that something called "Watergate" was going on, amazingly enough -- in fact, one of the clearest memories I have of my father is of him pointing out Nixon on the tv and saying, "That's Tricky Dick", which would have to be contemporaneous to the scandal because I decided when I was five that I wasn't getting anything out of the visitations and begged off for the next twenty years. (Which, unfortunately or fortunately, my father was just as content with, the self-centered git.) It's a good film to watch if you have a strong stomach for irony, considering what we're having to put up with now. I expect the staff at TCM to be dragged off for re-education any day now, though.

Leaving house shortly for [livejournal.com profile] ilwitchgrrl's movie night, so I must tear myself away from LJ soon to squeeze in a shower first... This won't be easy, because I've been dutifully Trying To Write all week and thus have a huge backup of flist yet to skim over. (I missed the arrival of The Horror That Is [livejournal.com profile] cinnajess's Spawn and everything... {sigh})
