In the end, I gave in and resorted to the brute-force "physical" transfer via the external USB drive, which since it's the same size as the one in Formerly and hasn't really been used for much in the last two years turned out to be relatively easy to "find" space enough on for the files that needed to make the spacewalk. Note to Self: for future reference, try to remember before initiating a 3-gig file transfer that you did, after all, come home from the shop with an external-drive-case fit for USB 2.0 speeds, and that said 2.0 drive works at a much higher percentage of its rated speed when it's not trying to cram itself through the old 1.1 hub that it was still connected to. (The same sized transfer, once I had figured this out, dropping from two hours to about five minutes.) Files arrived safely, and the house is now festooned with backup CDs of the Manuscript and all its little friends. Mm, catching up on technology.

And then, I fired up Safari to discover that my custom flist filters wouldn't let me log in to them. This was so not the night for LJ to play practical jokes with their cookies, after everything I've been through computerwise this week...

Random Thing to Worry About for 01/24/2006: thanks to [livejournal.com profile] unhipster, I have learned that there is apparently a sex offender living across the hall. Will raise this issue as discreetly as I can with the Landlord at next opportunity.
The good news is, Gaius is so quiet that I can now hear the TV in the other room when I'm parked here.

The bad news is, Mum has a terrible tendency to doze off in front of channels that turn into "Table-Saw Workshop" at 5 in the morning...
