Your assignment for today, kids, is to look at this collection of pictographs and come up with alternate interpretations for as many of them as possible. Preferably dirty ones. :)
Regarding the primitive contortions your elders (well, and mine) had to go through back in the days when computers were made out of rocks, I came across this tidbit about the TRS-80: "there was also an alternative tape interface that one could build in order to receive transmissions from the BBC's Chip Shop programme in the UK, an experiment in transmitting free software for several different BASIC home microcomputers, in a common tape format, over the radio".

This sounds like it would make an intriguing setup for either a steampunk or postapocalyptic story, no? "The Resistance will be transmitting Browser Interface v.0000008 on this frequency Sunday evening at 16.30, followed by this week's episode of the Archers..." SOMEBODY, WRITE ME THIS.
