[a few minutes later] And in the spirit of "pictures or it didn't happen":

It was a rooster, apparently belonging to two hispanic men who were perplexed at how to get it back from my side of the fence. I ended up chasing it out of the bushes outside my bedroom window {...pauses to read that sentence again, thinking, srsly, WTF...?} and it legged it southbound down the sidewalk, where I think it may have been recoveredand dragged back to a miserable existence in a cockfighting pit which is now All My Fault. We now return you to your regularly scheduled and probably chicken-free urban existences...
[Mum just got in and says that the chicken seems to live two doors down from us, as ATM he is in their back yard complaining mightily. Will attempt to investigate this further next time I go out back to the alley with our trash...]
