For the curious: my standards regarding Griff's replacement are that he or she be at least within spitting distance of Griff's own specs as a 333 MHz revision D iMac -- IE, at least a G3 with USB ports and a bit of horsepower, which would cover some of the earlier iBooks as well I think (an all-in-one form isn't crucial really but then the cost of a monitor does have to be figured in). For instance, I note that while I was at the library earlier, Small Dog had on offer a 266 (acceptable in a pinch), a 333 like Griff, two 350's and a 400 -- all of which, moreover, were within the current target price-range of 'under $500'. One is somewhat leery of 'used', but ideally it shouldn't be called upon to serve as primary recipient of my fiendish abuses for more than a year or so, if I can get the damned novel polished up and sold (and if I can't then I have worse things to worry about anyhow). I mostly need something that I can trust not to go bellyup with Griff's same ailment the day after any warranty runs out...
SO, if anyone reading this should chance upon details of a Mac for sale from Reputable Parties that fits this general description (and if I do sell the artwork the price-range may go up a little), I'd much appreciate hearing about it. :) (However, I can't get to eBay on the dimwitted IIci, so I'm not sure I could react fast enough to eBay listings.)
And as to the rest of my day, this time I walked to the library AND back, which is a total of about 6 miles. I think I have gotten more exercise in the last three weeks than in the last three years...
I came upon an interesting sight along the way: a sign and the bush alongside that appeared at first to be covered in rolled-up dead leaves, which objects turned out upon closer inspection to be coccoons! On the way home I collected a twig with three specimens on, which I have placed in a jar to see if they'll hatch. I don't know what they're coccoons OF, besides that a few of the caterpillers hadn't finished yet and they're about an inch long and densely spotted with black; with my luck, they're only cabbagewhites or alfalfa borers (they're very silky coccoons under the leaf material, which I think means moths), but this will be an interesting experiment nonetheless. So I will post here if anything comes of this. And if I do ever get my hands on another USB Mac, pictures of some sort may even appear...
And speaking of USB and pictures, I have to figure out some way to get the artworks I mentioned earlier photographed in some way that would end up inside a machine somewhere (all the pictures I currently have are slides which are a nuisance to have scanned). I do have a cheesy USB webcam which would serve, if only I had something to hook it to... I shall ponder this.
