Much to my surprise, I've remembered to keep up my media consumption list throughout the month of January. Total for the first month: 18 books read, 2 new-to-me films watched. (Note, of course, that these figures do not include books I decided weren't as interesting as they had sounded from a cursory inspection at the library, so if one wants to guess at an actual "books carried home during January" number, it would be maybe twice that.) Expect films totals to go up somewhat in future, as the Household has finally cracked and succumbed to the lure of NetFlix.
Landlady, it turns out, was aware of the alleged presence of the alleged sex-offender next door, who is apparently a mere associate of the actual lessee and may not in fact really reside there. Not quite sure which scenario is worse. No one amongst the building personnel seems to have seen him in some months, at any rate. Landlady was of the opinion that so long as the alleged offense wasn't against a child, she was of a live-and-let-live mind about it, which I don't exactly appreciate considering. We advised her to speak with whatever authority this is all in the hands of RE the fact that he may have fudged his residence info to them and left feeling somewhat reassured but not really satisfied.
Item the next on our ever-growing list of Reasons To Move: went to a community meeting last Wednesday to see what was up with some proposed plans to scrape off the single-family home next door to our building and replace it with four condo-units with a 26-space parking structure below and a rooftop restaurant. My reading of the room was that the area residents didn't really appreciate such a blatant attempt to buy us off with the lure of more parking, especially considering that the developer didn't seem to have given much thought to either the capacity of the alley that would be serving the garage, or the stress that restaurant deliveries and garbage would place on said alley, especially when we've already got critter issues back there ranging from rats (alleged) to feral cats to raccoons, possums, and possibly even coyotes. The idea has already been turned back for retooling by the alderman's zoning office twice, so I hope he means what he says about "taking significant community opposition into account". Regardless, I still want to be out of here before too many more years pass, I'm tired of not having a door to shut the cat away from my bed with. I want to be able to use my fluffy warm comforter again, dammit.
