I looked up about the vile thing that came out of the coccoon: it's an Evergreen Bagworm Moth. I notice that the dead juniper tree they were molesting to build their cocoons from has been whacked down... A second one of my specimens attempted to hatch but apparently found the effort too much for it -- there's a wing sticking out the bottom of the cocoon but that's as far as it got. Just as well.
