- New Thing Learned for 11 January: the Heaviside layer is the part of the atmosphere that reflects some radio waves back to earth, enabling reception past the horizon. The dates are about right for this discovery to have influenced Eliot in much the same way that Mickey's dog was named after the then-recently-discovered ex-planet. (One will note that the source book didn't make it onto the Media Consumption list, because I got bored and started skimming for the Crippen bits -- not that I have any particular interest in Crippen, nor anything against Marconi, but the author did seem more engaged with the crimeline half of the narrative. I also note here that a couple of weeks ago I got halfway through Devil in the White City before deciding that it was one of the two very similar books I've read on the subject after all.)
