Last night, on "As The World Votes":

Dick Gephardt's continued lack of eyebrows has finally come home to roost, and he is withdrawing from the race for the Democratic nomination. One wonders how differently history might have turned out with a timely application of Rogaine...

A surprising showing in Iowa for John Kerry, who was the race's original media-anointed front-runner, fell behind in the media's polls, and now vindicates the media's original predictions by winning 38% of the caucus turnout. One begins to suspect that the real story here is the media dicking around with our expectations for their own amusement. Likewise, after a savage campaign of character assassination by the media, Howard Dean comes in third with 18%. The biggest surprise of the night: John Edwards finishes in second, perhaps because disappointed Gephardt supporters believe Edwards is the long-lost twin of the late John Ritter and throw him the sympathy vote.

Surprising about five people who haven't been following the race, Dennis Kucinich comes in with 1% of the caucus total. Carol Moseley-Braun decided to cut her losses and dropped out several days prior to caucus night.

Next week: It's onward to New Hampshire, where Kerry's newfound momentum may smash upon the rocks of Wesley Clark's superior military experience, with sexy results.

As to my own feelings as a nominal Dean supporter about the result: well, I have said previously that Kerry is an acceptable choice for me as well, and I do feel a lot better about his fighting spirit now that we know he knows words like "fuck" (this is what finally convinced me that he's really a 'Nam vet, anyway). Edwards I'm still not so keen on; I'm sure he's a nice guy and all, but his trial-lawyer background makes me wary, and I'm growing very weary of Southern accents. It will be interesting to see how the essentially four-way race in NH shapes up over the next week with the addition of Clark to the mix. And what the media decides to do to Kerry now.

My prediction: Lieberman and perhaps Sharpton will have dropped out by or before the following South Carolina primary, and Kucinich is hanging on by his fingernails; this could be a four-way race in truth by Super Tuesday if NH is not kind to the second-tier candidates. Dean and Kerry have the $$ for the whole long haul regardless of early primary results, but Edwards and Clark need particularly good showings to stay in the race long-term.

After clearing off on Wednesday, the workmen said they would be returning on Thursday to finish up the plastering in the closet. This did not happen. Neither did they manifest themselves on Friday. We gave up waiting on Monday and ratted them out to the landlord, and she has promised to send them round Tuesday after 1PM. Just what I need, another whole day of waiting around for and then babysitting these bozos...

Mount Laundry has been reduced to a single small peak, mostly because we needed to take the fluffy comforter that Snip peed on to the laundromat with the big machines and so we decided to round up most of the rest of the detritus to get everything taken care of in one pass. The wool sweater that Mum wrecked in a previous laundry-related incident has now gone missing altogether; we're not sure if it made it to the laundromat and vanished from there, or if it's still at large in the house -- or if, just possibly, the workmen made off with it for some reason, since that's about the last time/place either of us recalls seeing it. (Why, is anyone's guess.) I'm not too annoyed because I was only wanting to felt it further so I could cut it up and make it into mittens anyway.

Oh, and the horror of my Vast Behind seems to have wreaked havoc on the "Antiques Roadshow" taping equipment, because not only didn't I glimpse myself in any background shots, the entire segment I saw them taping behind us (of a blue Tiffany vase) appeared nowhere in the three episodes as aired. Self-esteem now at 22% with a margin of error of +/- 4.5% . Hoping for workmanless conditions for fresh start at Getting Things Done by Monday.
Well, I didn't think I was THIS grim... )

And now I'm going to have that "Mr. Mister" song stuck in my head for the rest of the day, thankyouverymuch.

Today's "Waiting About For Workmen" countdown has begun. Which is why I'm still sitting here doing silly quizzes. When and if anyone does arrive I get to rush into the closet and stand over them repeating, 'no paint, it's winter' until they go away again. Joy.

Tonight's Civic Duty options are the SotU or dragging myself out to a MeetUp in this cold. I think I'll curl up into a fetal position under the covers and watch part 2 of "Barbarians" instead.
Still waiting for the Alleged Workmen. Still doing silly quizzes:

2:40 PM: Ah, screw it, I'm going to bed.

[she said, looking over her shoulder to see if those were the magic words that would finally conjure up the Alleged Workmen...]
