The Prequel's Progress: I've burned the last week or so working on floorplans and making models instead of actually getting much writing done, which feels like stalling until I reflect that in the course of it I discovered that A, a certain decorative glass dome doesn't need to be expressed on the outside of the building in question, thereby simplifying my life immensely, and B, the guest-quarters as originally sited wouldn't have had any windows, which might or might not have ended up becoming relevant but you just know that somebody out there would notice. So I suppose all in all it's been a valuable investment of time to get these sorts of details sorted out before I've got naked people filling their pockets with biscuits, so to speak. Onward to the rear of the building, which isn't nearly as complicated. Now, if I could only figure out how the roofs of the side-wings work... [scratching head]

Word count: 17,000, which rather surprised me considering that that was all done in the interstices of completing the first 100,000-word Manuscript. Currently I've got about 10 pages of the beginning and then scattered scenes and parts of scenes throughout. For the curious, who may well be reading this years after the fact for their thesis project or similarly geeky purposes (plan ahead, I always say :) ), I don't work in a linear fashion, draft after draft from the beginning to the end, nor do I establish a formal outline; while I do like to have at least some idea of where the beginning and the end are and roughly how they go (for the currently-circulating Manuscript I roughed out the first scene, the last scene, and The Big Sex Scene, in that order, before the rest of it happened along), I seem to work most productively by throwing out fragments of ideas as they come to me and then letting the scenes and structure crystallize around them. (Which will probably annoy my Theoretical Future Editors no end.) Future trivia, assuming Publication and enough success to interest at least one obsessive geek: the answer to "so what was the last scene of the completed Manuscript to be drafted out, then?" is the middle of the fight with the wolves. There will be a quiz...

(Future trivia #2: the writing on this one started with The Big Sex Scene. Go fig. :) )

Polls open in a matter of hours for the big Super Tuesday extravaganza. Does anyone still care?
